What Is CBD?

Short for cannabidiol, CBD is a chemical compound from the Cannabid sativa plant (also known as marijuana or hemp), and is the second most prevalent of active ingredients in marijuana, derived directly from the hemp plant (the cousin of the marijuana plant). CBD is a naturally occurring substance used as a remedy for many common ailments to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm. Unlike its sister, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not psychoactive and will not produce any high-euphoric feelings when consumed. Studies have shown CBD to be a safe, powerful, natural treatment for many common, everyday ailments.

To understand CBD, we have to look at the cannabis plant family as a whole. Marijuana and hemp are both plants within the cannabis family. THC, the cannabinoid that produces psychotropic effects, is most prevalent in marijuana, it is almost undetectable in industrial grade hemp with a legal limit of less than 0.3%. This means that CBD products derived from hemp, as mentioned before, will not produce psycho active effects (high) and we can remain balanced and benefit from its medicinal effects throughout the day.

Because our biological endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for regulating bodily and cognitive functions, CBD binds to our internal receptors CB1 (found primarily in the brain) and CB2 (found primarily in our body), causing our natural endocannabinoids and receptors to vary in amounts within our system.  This means that our individual needs for CBD will vary from one person to the next.

Cannabidiol (CBD) comes in different forms including full spectrum and isolate. CBD isolate is an effective option and a great choice for those who prefer to avoid THC, even in the smallest legal amount.

Being an adaptogen, CBD will adapt to our bodies’ needs and will become more efficient with increased use. Through various studies, CBD has been shown to help with falling asleep and staying asleep. Along with helping with anxiety, depression and sleeplessness. CBD also offers a more natural option for treating different types of chronic pain; such as fighting inflammation, sore muscles, relief from menstrual cramping and intestinal pain, help reduce stress, lower anxiety, aide in weight management and is also used to treat autism, ADD, ADHD, migraines and seizures where approved by the FDA.
